switchboardAccording to the US National Electrical Code, a switchboard is a large single panel, frame, or assembly of panels on which are mounted switches, overcurrent and other protective devices, buses, and usually instruments, on the face, back, or both. Dividing the main current provided to it into smaller currents for further distribution, and providing switching, current protection and metering for these various currents are the functions of a switchboard. Generally, switchboards distribute power to transformers, panel boards, control equipment, and ultimately to system loads.


A number of electric motors are required in many industrial and commercial applications and often it is advantageous to control some or all of the motors from a central location. The device used for this function is called Motor Control Centre (MCC). These tools are physical groupings of combination starters – a single enclosure containing the motor starter, fuses or circuit breaker, and a device for disconnecting power – in one assembly. MCCs have come a long way since they were introduced in 1937.
